When Wendy contacted me to document her day, she mentioned that she was going to wear a very special wedding dress that belonged to her Aunt. Initially she was concerned that during the alteration process it would totally fall apart and not survive the day. As it turned out, the dress turned out perfectly and she was able to wear it proudly. Even the Vintage cake topper was her Godmother’s from 1960!

Beautiful Ranch-Style Wedding in Flagstaff

This great feature was posted on the popular Phoenix Bride and Groom Magazine blog and we wanted to share it with you. Jim Bullock and Ken Heflin of Events by Show Stoppers, planned and executed the decor for this charming wedding.

Favorite memory: Greg’s favorite is watching me attempt to get my dress bustled, it was quite a situation, there is a great photo of a friend completely under my gown and me waiting patiently with a beer. Mine is spending time dancing to our silly song choices and laughing with Greg on the dance floor with our family and friends. It is also a great memory that I started to say Greg’s lines during our ceremony because I got so flustered and was so excited. It made for some great photos of us laughing up in front of everyone.

Gwen wore 2 dresses and I love her explanation why: I wore a short one in hopes of “tricking” Greg and keeping him from seeing me as I started my walk own the aisle. I also thought it might make the pictures a bit easier to accomplish before the ceremony. I switched back into it late into the reception.The short one was by Melissa Sweet and is called Billie, I plan to wear that one again some day for a fabulous party! My ceremony and reception dress was by Vera Wang, called Diana.

We walked down the aisle to a fiddler playing our favorite song by Old Crow Medicine Show (Wagon Wheel, also our first dance song).

I love the quiet solitude of these images- Gwen and Greg are alone on their wedding day in the most romantic way possible

The wedding day decor can be described as “vintage with a purpose”: My sister created all of the table markers as a tribute to the horses we have loved at the Miller Bros. DK Ranch (my family’s ranch for generations). The names on the tables are the names of the horses we have known.We seated my grandfather at the table named for his horse growing up, Black Eye. Greg and I sleep under the framed names from our wedding table (Lady and Trouble, very appropriately). My sister also created a truly amazing guest book from an old copy of a book about Princess Grace called Once Upon a Time, she cut out pages and replaced them with pages to sign and old family photos of our families. My mom also put in a lot of hard work, she collected over 100 vintage table settings for the guests of mismatched china and vintage silver…

The plan for our wedding was to make it as personal and meaningful as possible…We did not want to make any decisions “just because” or base our plans on what we thought was the norm. We wanted an outdoor wedding, but wanted to steer clear of too country a vibe, although boots were encouraged!

Favorite things:

My favorite thing about Greg is how sweet he is. He always puts me first and worries about how I feel, he is sweet and romantic in an understated way that just comes from his nature.

His favorite thing about me is that I am his best friend and that everything is always better when were together.” It is the greatest thing ever to be able to be married to your best friend.”

The couple chose a family style meal of pork, fettucini alfredo and homemade breads that were all served on passed platters, like a family dinner; not only is the clear-top tent gorgeous for the views during the day, it also has such a cool nighttime effect too.

L’Auberge Abloom with Springtime Romance

L’Auberge de Sedona was the location for this pretty April wedding. Spring weddings do not have to be pastel colors. More and more brides are choosing bold and deep jewel tones for spring.

Frida Kahlo Inspired Vow Renewal Part 1

Three years ago, when Ken I approached Tlaquepaque management about creating an annual Dia de los Muertos ( Day of the Dead ) festival, we never dreamed it would take off like it did. Well…. actually, yes we did. We just didn’t know it would do it so quickly. With the generous and enthusiastic support of Tlaquepaque, Dia de los Muertos is off and running, destined to be one of Sedona’s most popular public events. Ken and I and our fabulous staff are pleased to see our vision come to fruition.

It is gratifying and emotional to see so many people comforted by reminiscing, honoring and talking about their deceased loved ones, and at the same time, having so much fun with their friends and families. It was wonderful to hear all the stories. To think that we were, and are, a part of bringing this lovely celebration about is quite moving for us personally.

Not wanting to stop there, last year, Show Stoppers originally came up the idea of staging a Day of the Dead wedding shoot during the 2011 Dia de los Muertos celebration. Last year’s shoot was beautiful, becoming the precursor for this year’s elaborate shoot.

For this year’s festivities, we wanted to create an event within an event and have the entire project documented with jaw-dropping photography that told a story. There were several goals to achieve. We needed to capture the ethnicity of the event and the incredible visual backdrop of the Tlaquepaque property. We wanted to feel palatable excitement, energy, joy and emotion, all in one body of work that would dazzle. The decor naturally needed to be up front and center. To be sure, particularly for the wedding segment, we wanted romance, sexy and edgy to be the theme throughout. Thus was born this year’s Frida Kahlo inspired wedding. As you are about to see, everything came together with all the cultural ethnicity, romance, sensuality and excitement we had been looking for all along.

Show Stoppers knew exactly the photographers that would be the perfect fit. We hoped that we could get them and were thrilled when we did. We know you are going to be dazzled by these truly remarkable images by the incredibly talented artists at Sierra Blanco Photography. Kevin and Tina came on board without question and gave un unwavering support from the beginning. We especially appreciated them working diligently into the wee hours of the mornings to get these images edited in only two short weeks, especially when they had so much on their plate already. Welcome to Dia de los Muertos 2012, primera parte!

Frida Kahlo Inspired Vow Renewal Part 2

There is more to this celebration than you know. It was actually very special that Patricia and Scott had this opportunity to renew their marriage vows. ( See part one ) They told me that when they met on South Beach in Miami, it was love at first sight and a whirlwind romance with a ceremony on the beach. They never had the opportunity to have an actual wedding ceremony in the traditional sense of the word. Although the ceremony I styled was not exactly what they would have imagined, it was very real to them. They were the perfect fit and soaked it up like a sponge. Ken and I could not have been more thrilled knowing this little bit of background about our charming couple and how it played into our vision. Now for part two of our adventure.

It seems like everywhere one turns, there is something said or written about Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village, the beloved heart-and-soul of Sedona. While Tlaquepaque has a variety of events that regularly happen within her old-world Mexican walls, there is nothing quite like the popularity of weddings. Attribute it to the romance, the architecture, the chapel, the landscaping, charm, singularity… whatever… there is something for everyone at Tlaquepaque, and that “something” attracts brides by the hundreds to have their special wedding day at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.
